What is Ceramic Coating?
Ceramic Coatings are a type of sealant. It is a liquid polymer that's applied to a vehicle's exterior. Made primarily from silicon dioxide (SiO2), similar to the material found in quartz and sand. Once applied correctly, it bonds with the surface, forming a protective layer on top of the clear coat. It can also be applied to various surfaces, It can be applied to Paint, paint-Protection Film (PPF), Wraps, Wheels, Trim, and Glass. Notably, its hydrophobic properties make it excellent for windshields, causing water to bead and run off easily. Although it repels dirt, tar, road grime, and mud from severely sticking to the paint, regular car washes are still necessary making it easier to clean and maintain the surface. Ceramic Coatings also do not have to be reapplied regularly like a Traditional Wax after every wash.
The Process of Installing A Ceramic Coating
1. Surface Preparation:
Thorough Cleaning: The vehicle's exterior must be meticulously cleaned to remove dirt, grime, and any contaminants. This typically involves washing with a car wash soap and water, followed by a clay bar treatment to remove embedded contaminants.
Paint Correction: If necessary, paint correction techniques like polishing and compounding may be used to remove minor imperfections like swirls, scratches, and oxidation.
2. Ceramic Coating Application:
Application: The ceramic coating is applied in small sections using specialized applicators or microfiber cloths. The coating is spread evenly and thinly across the surface.
Drying/Curing: After application, the coating is allowed to dry or cure for a specific amount of time, as per the manufacturer's instructions. This typically involves avoiding water, moisture, and direct sunlight during the curing process.
3. Inspection and Maintenance:
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is crucial to preserve the longevity and effectiveness of the ceramic coating. This typically involves washing the vehicle with a pH-neutral car wash soap and using a quick detailer to remove light dirt and grime between washes.
Inspection: Once the coating has cured, a final inspection is conducted to ensure even coverage and the absence of any defects.
